Let's continue this very simple but EXCELLENT drill to help teach your child to lead with their head, when batting on the front foot.
Yet again, you can do this drill pretty much anywhere... In your lounge, on the lawn, or in a net (as you will see in the video).
Just remember, the most important thing for you child is to:
- FIRST - watch the ball...
- and SECONDLY - lead with the head...
And this will get them into the correct position to play the shot.
Cricket Batting Drill: Leading With The Head, Part 2
Transcript
Today's drill is just a progression on the last drill we did where the batter performed a one-handed pickup, focusing on leading with the head. This helps with getting the head in line and over the ball, which allows for good weight transfer through the shot, giving the batsman accuracy, and most importantly, good timing. So today we add the bat, starting with one hand and progressing to two.
So we're gonna go one-handed again here. Just make sure, like I was saying to you just now, make sure that you're concentrating on watching the ball. And making sure that the bat is coming through nice and straight. It's nice and slow, okay. So that it's building good muscle memory. So when you're facing a fast bowler, you're not thinking about it.
The bat's just gonna come through nice and straight, but the most important thing is that your head is in the right place first. Go for it. Good. That's fine. Good. The next thing we can do, if we wanna make it a little bit tougher for you, we'll end up putting little cones out. And then you gotta hit those cones, but we're gonna move on from that now.
Progress a little bit, you're gonna go to two hands. It's exactly the same drill. Again, focus on getting your head going first, and everything else will follow, nice and slow. Make sure that the bat's coming through nice and straight, and hold your position and then step straight back.
Good. And again. Better and again. Very good, Very good. That first one on the cover drive your foot wasn't quite at the ball. Okay. So you played a little bit in front of yourself. And please remember, always end or for drill session with some fun. Allow the child to hit the ball as hard as they want.
Doesn't matter where it goes, as long as they're making contact. And get some satisfaction outta giving the ball a good wallop. Remember also to be patient, encouraging and trust in the process. Have a great day.
