A Tip On Throwing for Your Young Cricketer

In all these games and drills that we are going to be bringing you in the cricket fundamentals program, your child is going to need to throw.

And there's a basic aspect of throwing that many kids miss (or miss out on being taught)...

That will make things a little easier, and their throws a lot better.

Take a look!

This lesson is taken straight out of a game we teach in the Fundamentals program called "Sevens"... It's brilliant for their skills development!

A Tip on Throwing for Your Young Cricketer

Transcript:

Okay, you can go a little bit closer. All right? 'Cos obviously if you go too far away and they're very small, the ball's not gonna bounce back unless you're wanting it to bounce on the ground back to you. So, good catch, well done. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Very basic and simple.

Just on that, before we carry on, I just want to give you a quick little tip on when you're throwing. If you're gonna... if you let them hold the ball too deep in their hand, the ball's gonna stick and their throw is gonna be inconsistent. Often it's gonna shoot up in the air.

So it's really important that they let the ball sit in their fingers.

Obviously, I've got a big hand, a child's hand is a lot smaller, but you want them to hold the ball in their fingers and let their thumb come on the other side, obviously there and hold the ball...

So you're holding it between your fingers and your thumb. All right? And then that just gives you a little bit more movement in your wrist, and a bit more control, as opposed to it being stuck in your hand and having to let the ball go. Okay? Makes the throw a little bit easier.

Okay, Hails? So you've done your seven catches without anything else. You're now gonna move on to one clap. One, you can count. Two, three. Whoops.

You've got to concentrate on that throw. You've got to concentrate on your throw. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7. Well done. So there, there's quite a bit of concentrating that you have to do there, okay? Remember you want to try and get your timing so as you throw you clap so that your clap is in time, each time.

You don't want to, this one throw, clap, quickly catch and the next one you throw and you forget to clap. And then clap just before you catch it. Cause you don't wanna be snatching. It's about timing, all right?

And the better your timing is, the more rhythm you have, the easier things are. And you got to concentrate on your throw. As you saw, there were one or two that went all over the place. You want to try and aim at a spot on the wall and hit that spot every time so that your throw is good.
